UAE Built a Cultural Ecosystem, Not Just Museums, Global Art Forum Concludes

festival-fair · 2026-07-09

The 20th Global Art Forum, part of Art Dubai, commenced with a dialogue examining 20 years of cultural evolution in the UAE. Shumon Basar, the Forum's Commissioner, led a panel featuring Antonia Carver (Director of Art Jameel), Sunny Rahbar (co-founder of The Third Line and Bidoun), and Sultan Sooud Al Qassemi (founder of Barjeel Art Foundation). Instead of focusing on technology or geopolitics, the discussion reflected on the UAE’s development of a connected network of institutions, concepts, and individuals. Notable highlights included Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi’s appointment in 2003 to direct the Sharjah Biennial, which elevated its global standing. The dialogue underscored that culture preceded architecture, debunking the notion that contemporary art emerged solely with impressive buildings. The contributions of Sharjah Art Foundation, Bidoun magazine, The Third Line, Art Dubai, and Barjeel Art Foundation in shaping intellectual infrastructure were also acknowledged. Today, the cultural scene of the UAE encompasses Dubai, Sharjah, and Abu Dhabi, each playing unique yet harmonious roles. Ultimately, the conversation affirmed that the UAE's greatest success lies in fostering an ecosystem where ideas, institutions, and individuals continuously influence one another.
