Time for Three: Genre-Blending Trio Returns to Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival

The genre-defying trio Time for Three, comprising violinists Charles Yang and Nick Kendall and bassist Ranaan Meyer, will perform their program "Jukebox" at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg on August 25 at 7:30 PM. The concert, presented by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, is sold out, though some tickets may be available at the box office. The ensemble, which met at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, blends classical tradition with folk, jazz, and pop, and includes three vocal parts. In an interview, Yang and Kendall discussed their spontaneous performance style, their Grammy win, and the importance of live music. They emphasized that each concert is unique, shaped by audience energy, and that they aim to create a cohesive experience. Their Grammy-winning album was recorded with the Philadelphia Orchestra during the pandemic. The trio has performed at the festival multiple times, including in unconventional venues like a greenhouse, a shipyard, and an airplane hangar. They credit their preparation for enabling spontaneity on stage, citing Leonard Bernstein as an influence. They also discussed the role of social media as a necessary tool for reaching audiences, while stressing the value of deep, immersive live experiences.
