Three Indian Design Projects Reimagine Matchboxes as Cultural Archives and Contemporary Art

Three distinct Indian creative projects are transforming the humble matchbox into a vehicle for contemporary design and cultural commentary. Designer Sonal Nagwani leads Maachis, creating collectible wooden matchboxes with magnets that explore themes like queer rights and female autonomy, inspired by Gautam Hemmady's extensive archive. Studio Kokaachi, run by Tina and Pratheek Thomas, produces Matchbox Comix—accordion-style comic strips housed in matchboxes designed to appeal across generations. Artist Harshit Agrawal developed Matchbox Momentos, an interactive game with Google Arts & Culture and the Museum of Art & Photography, using AI to reinterpret Hemmady's collection of historical labels. These projects draw from India's rich matchbox heritage, where labels have documented social change, Bollywood, and global influences. Nagwani cites early boxes like 'Swatantra' (freedom) reinterpreted through queer rights, while Agrawal's work analyzes 19 thematic categories including freedom movement imagery and printing evolution. Kokaachi's comics aim for quirky, absurd stories without being preachy. All three initiatives leverage the matchbox's compact format to preserve and advance visual storytelling traditions.
