Tempo Nok Mural in Calais's Fort Nieulay Tells Neighbourhood Stories

As part of the 2026 Calais Street Art Festival, French artist Tempo Nok has finished a spray-paint mural in the Fort Nieulay area of Calais. This artwork, located at 118 rue de Djerba on the residence of Francine, encapsulates what the artist refers to as fragments of life from the community, featuring stories linked to Chez Isma, Loïc, Wendy and Noé, as well as Michel and his camper van. Tempo Nok emphasizes the mural's connection to the local people and landmarks, calling it a collection of 'simple stories and memories.' The festival's program scheduled his work from August 1 to 5 beside Place de Djerba. Since starting in 1999 in Paris's southern suburbs, Tempo Nok's style evolved significantly after a pivotal trip to Japan in 2006, now focusing on layered paint and bubble-like forms. His mural serves as a portrait of the street, capturing the essence of its residents and their experiences. The festival featured ten artists who contributed to various locations throughout Calais, with Tempo Nok's mural being a vital part of the growing public-art initiative.
