TBWA HAKUHODO has introduced the Radio Time Machine, an artificial intelligence system designed to support cognitive health in senior care environments. The device generates customized audio content resembling historical radio broadcasts, combining period-specific news and music from selected years between 1950 and 2025. Developed in partnership with Nichii Gakkan, a major Japanese care facility operator, the project applies principles of reminiscence therapy to stimulate memory, enhance communication, and improve emotional well-being among elderly residents. The interface mimics mid-20th century radio designs, featuring a dial that selects years instead of frequencies. Upon selection, AI creates unique broadcasts with era-appropriate content delivered by synthetic voices modeled on human recordings. TBWA HAKUHODO has initiated collaborative research with Kitasato University in Tokyo to scientifically evaluate the device's effects on cognitive functions and behavioral symptoms associated with dementia.
