The 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, have triggered a major urban transformation, blending temporary scenography with lasting infrastructure upgrades. Architect and designer Claudia Pignatale, Head of Brand & Look, created a visual identity for the event, including a LED installation on the Ponte Girevole with the motto 'Embrace the Future', large aerial coverings on Via D'Aquino, and new street furniture, all while preserving the city's authenticity. She also illuminated the Concattedrale Gran Madre di Dio, designed by Gio Ponti, with the installation 'Attraverso'. Official photographer Massimiliano Tuveri, in an interview, detailed the lasting changes: the Stadio Erasmo Iacovone was modernized by studio GAU Arena, and a new swimming facility with Olympic pools was built at Torre d'Aiala. Peripheral neighborhoods like Salinella saw the renovation of PalaRicciardi and PalaMazzola for fencing and volleyball. Urban infrastructure was upgraded citywide, including new asphalt, modern bus shelters, improved cycling paths, and renewed lighting. Tuveri noted that the true impact will be felt in 5-10 years as children grow up with these facilities. The local economy is booming, with restaurants and hotels full, and Taranto Vecchia is becoming a nightlife hub. While citizens are enthusiastic, concerns remain about the future management of the new structures. The Games, featuring 26 nations in 32 sports, represent a step toward a more sustainable and inclusive city.
