Swiss Researchers Develop Sensor-Based Authentication System for Digital Media
Researchers at ETH Zurich in Switzerland have developed a new sensor technology that cryptographically signs images, videos, and audio at the moment of capture within the sensor chip itself. This system, co-developed by Fernando Cardes and Felix Franke, creates a signature that verifies the data's origin from a camera, indicates the exact capture time, and confirms it has not been altered. The technology stores signatures in a public, immutable ledger, allowing anyone to verify authenticity by comparing the chip's signature with the original data. This approach contrasts with the existing C2PA standard championed by Adobe, which relies on a camera's main processor to add cryptographic signatures after data travels from the sensor. While C2PA can be deployed via software updates, the new system requires hardware redesigns for camera sensors.
