Study Finds 14 of 21 Nonprofit Websites Place Donate Control in First Screen, Versus All 29 Charities Measured
A comparative audit of 21 nonprofit websites, published September 10, 2026, found that 14 place a donate control in the first screen, while all 29 charity websites measured with the same method do so. Each site was opened in a browser at 1280×860 and the donate control followed one hop into the giving form. Fifteen of the 21 nonprofits offer suggested amounts and 15 offer a monthly gift option, but only three pre-select monthly giving; charities are three times as likely to pre-select it. Eight organizations link no financial reports from the homepage, while one offers eight separate routes to its accounts; 13 of 21 link financials at all. Not one nonprofit states what share of spending reaches programs, compared with four of the 29 charities. Ten sites state impact as a number in the first screen, four offer fee cover and three pre-select monthly. Sites run on Squarespace, WordPress, Drupal, Wix and Shopify, with giving handled by Fundraise Up, Classy, Blackbaud, Give Lively, EveryAction, Stripe, Chariot and Double the Donation. Palettes skew blue and teal, unlike the saturated yellow, orange and red of the charity set. Named examples include the Gates Foundation, Wikimedia Foundation, National Geographic Society, Doctors Without Borders, World Wild Life, Team Rubicon, The Nature Conservancy and DonorsChoose. The audit replaced three entries from a previous version and excluded a fourth that served a bot challenge.
