Sony to stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games by 2028

Sony has announced that from January 2028 it will no longer manufacture physical discs for new PlayStation games, shifting entirely to digital distribution via the PlayStation Store or physical boxes containing download codes. The decision, driven by changing consumer habits, reflects that in 2024 physical game sales accounted for only 3% of Sony's gaming revenue, compared to 20% for digital downloads. Industry experts estimate that 80% of PlayStation games and 90% of Xbox games are now sold digitally. This move follows Rockstar Games' recent decision to release the upcoming GTA VI without a physical disc, available only digitally or with a download code in the box, sparking debate among fans about the loss of resale value. Sony, which unlike many competitors manufactures its own discs, cited the need to adapt to market trends.
