Sonsbeek 2026: Arnhem Park Transformed into Open-Air Museum

The 13th installment of Sonsbeek, named 'Ik hoef geen tuin, ik deel een park' ('I don't need a garden, I share a park'), is set to take place in Arnhem, Netherlands, from July to October 2026. Established in 1949 as a civic initiative after the war, the open-air exhibition will be directed by Orlando Maaike Gouwenberg, alongside curators Amira Gad and Christina Li. The event will showcase 18 international artists and collectives, such as Larry Achiampong, Korakrit Arunanondchai, and Alvaro Barrington, focusing on themes like memory, landscape, and migration. Installations will be featured in Sonsbeek Park and partner locations, including Museum Arnhem. A public program called 'Spiral Movements,' curated by Berber Meindertsma, will include various activities, while a film series titled 'Darkness Reframed' is scheduled for August and September at Focus Filmtheater. The curators prioritize participatory engagement and exploration over definitive answers. With city backing since 2024, the organization is planning for the festival's 80th anniversary in 2029.
