Smithsonian Adds 1,000 Free Images to Unsplash from 21 Museums

The Smithsonian Institution has released 1,000 open-access images across 12 collections on Unsplash, drawn from its 21 museums, libraries, research centers, and zoo. The curated selection includes iconic portraits—Amelia Earhart (c. 1932, Peter A. Juley), Albert Einstein (1921, Harris & Ewing), Jackie Robinson (1949, Robert F. Cranston et al.), Louis Armstrong (c. 1928, Woodward's Studio), Geronimo (Camillus Sidney Fly), and Queen Victoria (1898, unidentified)—alongside artifacts like a Fuegian group portrait (1888), the schooner "Grampus" (1886), a sharecropper's wife and child (1935, Arthur Rothstein), and Georgia O'Keeffe's hand on a car wheel (1933, Alfred Stieglitz). Natural history images feature a sea anemone, clouded leopard, giant panda Bei Bei, emperor tamarin, and sloth Athena. All images are public domain (CC0) for free download and use. The partnership is ongoing, with more collections to come from the Smithsonian's 157 million-item archive.
