Salzburg Festival Artistic Director Departs Amid Leadership Dispute

Markus Hinterhäuser, the artistic director of the Salzburg Festival, has been suspended from his position following prolonged disagreements with the festival's supervisory board. The board announced on Thursday that Hinterhäuser is leaving immediately due to irreconcilable differences regarding his leadership approach. The conflict centers around alleged violations of a conduct clause included in his 2024 contract extension, which was intended to regulate his behavior toward festival management and others. Specifically, the board cited Hinterhäuser's indication of preferences for a candidate to lead the drama division without that candidate participating in a formal hearing. Hinterhäuser had acknowledged communication errors in late February but initially intended to remain in his role until 2031 as originally planned. The Salzburg Festival, held in Mozart's birthplace, is considered one of the world's premier high-culture events. Hinterhäuser has led the prestigious Austrian festival for opera, concerts, and theater since 2016, achieving significant artistic and economic success with high attendance rates and prominent performers. The upcoming summer festival in July and August is scheduled to feature premieres of works by Austrian Nobel laureates Peter Handke and Elfriede Jelinek. The supervisory board, which includes political representatives and public funders, is now conducting discussions about interim leadership and preparing for a permanent successor. Media speculation about potential successors has mentioned opera director Barrie Kosky and Nikolaus Bachler, current director of the Salzburg Easter Festival, though both have indicated they are not currently involved in the matter.
