Russian Disinformation Campaign Targets Hungary with Fake Videos Impersonating Media Outlets

A Russian bot network has been circulating fabricated videos in Hungary that falsely claim Ukrainian refugees are planning an attack on Prime Minister Viktor Orban. These videos bear the logos of Reuters and Deutsche Welle (DW) to appear legitimate, though neither organization has reported such plans. This tactic, known as media spoofing, involves creating content that mimics established media brands to enhance credibility. According to DW's fact-checking team, the videos have reached over 100,000 people on social media in Hungary. The campaign is linked to a pro-Russian disinformation effort called "Matryoshka" or "Operation Overload," which spreads false information under the guise of reputable media. Mathias Stamm, DW's editor-in-chief, stated that such disinformation is used unscrupulously to foster distrust and distort political narratives, emphasizing the need for thorough fact-checking to expose these deceptions. Meanwhile, fact-checkers face increasing challenges, including stricter U.S. visa scrutiny under the Trump administration for applicants associated with disinformation or content moderation work. The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), which includes DW, has criticized this policy and rejected censorship allegations.
