Refik Anadol Opens DATALAND, First AI Art Museum

Refik Anadol Studio in Los Angeles is preparing for the June 20 opening of DATALAND, the world's first museum dedicated to AI-generated art. Anadol's team of over 20 people—including architects, engineers, data scientists, and designers—works from a former window factory near the LA River. The artist calls his practice "data-painting," using AI-powered Large Nature Model and a "thinking brush" to transform datasets of flora, fauna, fungi, and coral reefs into imagined imagery. The studio builds its own proprietary computers and produces physical prints of digital data-paintings for NFT collectors. Anadol has a longstanding relationship with Google since his 2016 residency with Google Artists + Machine Intelligence. During a visit, Anadol observed a researcher whose computer, programmed with data of millions of species, was "dreaming" and creating fantastical botany and scenery.
