Pierre Salvadori's 'La Vénus électrique' to Open 79th Cannes Film Festival in 2026

The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival will commence on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, with the world premiere of French director Pierre Salvadori's new film 'La Vénus électrique.' The opening ceremony will be hosted by actress Eye Haïdara, followed by the screening in the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Simultaneously, the film will be shown in cinemas across France, facilitated by the Fédération Nationale des Cinémas Français in partnership with France Télévisions and Brut, aiming to bring audiences together for this comedic tale. Set in 1928 Paris, the narrative follows Antoine Balestro, a successful painter struggling with creative block after his wife's death. In a drunken state, he attempts to contact her through a medium but unknowingly communicates with Suzanne, a carnival worker who initially deceives him. As their interactions progress, Suzanne develops genuine feelings for Antoine. The film marks Salvadori's eleventh feature in his 34-year career, exploring themes of deception and ambiguity. It features a cast including Pio Marmaï, Anaïs Demoustier, Gilles Lellouche, Vimala Pons, Gustave Kervern, and Madeleine Baudot. Salvadori expressed pride in having his work open the festival, noting Cannes' celebration of cinematic artistry. The festival will run from May 12 to May 23, 2026, with South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook presiding over the jury. 'La Vénus électrique' succeeds Amélie Bonnin's 'Partir un jour' as the opening film.
