Open Monumentendag 2026 in Flevoland: Five Highlights

On September 12 and 13, 2026, Open Monumentendag (Open Monument Day) celebrates its 40th anniversary, coinciding with Flevoland's 40th birthday. The jubilee edition focuses on the Netherlands' youngest province, offering a program of monuments and activities. Highlights include Oud-Kraggenburg, a 19th-century artificial island with a lighthouse and lightkeeper's house, now privately owned but open for tours during the weekend. In Nagele, the modernist village designed by renowned figures such as Aldo van Eyck, Gerrit Rietveld, and Mien Ruys, visitors can explore Museum Nagele and Huis Polman, a 1950s house museum. Land art enthusiasts can visit Robert Morris's 'Observatorium' (1977) in Lelystad, where a free guided tour is offered at 3 PM. The Waterloopbos near Marknesse, a former hydraulic research site, will activate its wave machine to demonstrate how scale models of dams and ports were tested. Finally, De Kubus in Lelystad, a 1983 cultural center designed by architect Wim Davidse in structuralist style, will offer guided tours on September 12. The event underscores Flevoland's unique heritage, from reclaimed land to modernist and land art landmarks.
