Open Design Week 2026 Turns Frankfurt Rhine Main into a Distributed Design Platform
The inaugural Open Design Week, part of the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026, drew more than 35,000 attendees to 200 events held at 150 locations from June 5 to 14. This festival took place across four cities: Frankfurt, Offenbach, Darmstadt, and Wiesbaden, featuring Focus Days that highlighted local creative communities. Notable events included 'A Step Ahead: 125 Jahre Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt' at a UNESCO site and the Circle Cube in Offenbach, which showcased circular construction techniques. The lineup also featured the premiere of Gary Hustwit's documentary, World Industrial Design Day, Forward Festival, Design Trails, and Rooftop Day Frankfurt. Organizers indicated a high level of participation and intend to establish Open Design Week as an annual event starting in 2027, themed 'Design for Democracy. Atmospheres for a Better Life.'
