New York Art Fair Week 2026: Craft, Textiles, and Decolonial Narratives

festival-fair · 2026-05-15

During New York Art Fair Week 2026, five fairs—Frieze, NADA, Independent, 1-54, and Esther III—showcased a collective turn toward craft, textiles, and decolonial themes. At NADA, Kelly Tapia-Chuning presented unwound serapes that deconstruct traditional Mexican textiles to reclaim Indigenous identity, influenced by Gloria E. Anzaldúa. Esaí Alfredo's queer nighttime paintings in blue and red monochromes were another highlight. 1-54 featured Alex Burke's doll sculptures made from tattered cloth, addressing colonial erasure, and Laetitia KY's photographic works reclaiming Black hair narratives. Esther III, held at the Estonian House, offered whimsical curation with Ken Tisa's textiles and a sculptural dress installation. Independent at Pier 36 was thematically cohesive, spotlighting Comme des Garçons' early work and Eleanor Conover's self-built canvases incorporating rocks and earth, soon to be shown at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art. Frieze presented established names like Anicka Yi, Alice Neel, Robert Longo, Tracey Emin (with a 2004 blanket piece), and Gerhard Richter, but felt overwhelming and uncurated. Across all fairs, artists rejected flatness in favor of textured, hand-made works, responding to AI and digital smoothness. Prices rose despite lower commercial demand, with varied price points targeting different buyers.
