New Gallery's 'Il Sistema dell'Arte' Encases 1,800 Names in a QR Code, Valued at €500M

The anonymous collective New Gallery, known for its art strikes and provocations, has launched "Il Sistema dell'Arte" (The Art System), a project they claim is the largest group exhibition ever, contained entirely within a QR code. The QR code, which lists over 1,800 names of critics, journalists, gallerists, and artists who constitute the contemporary art system, is itself presented as the artwork. The collective has placed a hyperbolic estimate of €500 million on the work, arguing that the object contains the very mechanism that normally produces and legitimizes value. This marks a strategic shift for New Gallery: instead of attacking the art system from the outside (as with past stunts like spreading mothballs at an opening or issuing fake artist lists), they now absorb it from within. The project will be activated on June 11, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:30 PM at Edicola Centrale in Piazza Testaccio, Rome. The list remains open and will be updated over time.
