National Juneteenth Museum Hosts Second Freedom Vibes Festival in Fort Worth

The National Juneteenth Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, will host its second annual Freedom Vibes festival from June 11 to June 20, 2026. This 10-day celebration includes concerts, cultural showcases, art displays, educational workshops, and a free Celebration of Choirs on June 14, featuring 20-time Grammy winner Kirk Franklin, a native of Fort Worth. This festival leads up to the museum's groundbreaking on October 7, 2026, coinciding with Opal Lee's 100th birthday, for its $70 million facility. CEO Jarred Howard stated the museum's mission is to address historical misconceptions about Juneteenth, highlighting that enslaved Black Texans were aware of the Emancipation Proclamation before it was enforced in Galveston on June 19, 1865. The museum's Fort Worth location is strategic, given the area's population of 8.5 million and major airports, along with the presence of 99-year-old activist Opal Lee, whose childhood home was destroyed by a white mob on June 19, 1939. Lee's advocacy contributed to President Joe Biden signing the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 17, 2021. The City of Fort Worth has pledged $15 million to support the initiative. The festival will also feature a voter education workshop, underscoring the museum's dedication to civic engagement amid ongoing concerns regarding voting rights and racial equity.
