Nanni Moretti Returns to Venice Competition After 37 Years

Nanni Moretti's latest film, 'Succederà questa notte', premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival, marking his first appearance there since 1989. The film, based on stories by Israeli writer Eshkol Nevo, stars Jasmine Trinca and Louis Garrel. Moretti's history with Venice has been fraught with disputes, including a 1989 incident when his film 'Palombella rossa' was rejected by festival director Guglielmo Biraghi, leading Moretti to screen it in the independent Settimana della critica section. The film was later championed by French critic Serge Daney, contributing to Moretti's subsequent success at Cannes. Moretti's previous Venice appearances include winning the Silver Lion for 'Sogni d'oro' in 1981, a contentious jury stint in 1986, and a jury presidency in 2001 marked by internal conflicts. In 2024, he presented a restored version of 'Ecce bombo' at Venice. The new film was initially intended for Cannes but was not completed in time.
