Nairobi's Otamatsuri Anime Convention Draws Over 4,000 Cosplayers

On August 22, the Otamatsuri Anime x Manga convention in Nairobi drew over 4,000 participants, highlighting the burgeoning cosplay and Japanese pop culture community in Kenya. This annual event united comic enthusiasts, gamers, cosplayers, and digital artists from the region to honor creative arts, gaming competitions, and comic culture. Photographers Luis Tato, Daniel Irungu, and Anadolu captured the lively scene, showcasing cosplayers in intricate costumes, including characters from beloved series such as Gachiakuta, Digimon, and Bleach. Notable attendees included 34-year-old Julius Mokaya, who created a prop for his Enjin cosplay from Gachiakuta, and Yvonne Chockey, who crafted a mask at home in Kutus and later portrayed Angewomon from Digimon on social media. The convention featured performances by cosplayers and various musical acts, emphasizing the blend of Japanese anime culture with local creativity. This event illustrates the increasing passion for cosplay in Kenya, supported by a vibrant and youthful fanbase, and is recognized as a unique gathering that nurtures a community centered on Japanese pop culture in East Africa.
