Museum of Fine Arts Boston Marks 50th Anniversary of Art in Bloom Floral Exhibition

From May 1 to 3, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston commemorates the 50th year of its Art in Bloom exhibition, enhancing galleries with floral designs inspired by artworks. Initiated in 1976 by Charles Thomas to increase spring attendance, this event connects art with floral arrangements crafted by New England garden clubs, professional designers, and volunteers. This concept has led to over 40 similar flower festivals across the U.S. and Canada, including those at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. While some venues keep the Art in Bloom title, others adopt names like Bouquets to Art, as seen with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Victoria Jane Ream's 1997 book highlights Thomas's vision of merging spring flowers with fine art to engage a broader audience. Olga Khvan, senior manager of public relations at the museum, shared that Thomas became deputy director of resource development in 1975 before advancing to director of membership. The event remains popular among art and flower lovers, showcasing installations like Aquarius by Taylor Weber and Sean Riggin at the North Carolina Museum of Art's Written in the Stars event.
