Milan Machinima Festival Celebrates 30 Years of Video Game Filmmaking
The Milan Machinima Festival, dedicated to artistic machinima, recently held its 2026 edition at IULM University in Milan. Machinima, the practice of creating films within video games, marks its 30th anniversary this year. Festival curator Matteo Bittanti opened the 2026 edition by tracing machinima's dual origins to 1996. One lineage stems from the gaming community with Diary of a Camper, created by the Rangers clan using id Software's Quake (1996). The other originates in contemporary video art with Miltos Manetas's Miracle (1996), part of his Videos After Videogames series (1996-2002). Bittanti distinguishes between 'vernacular machinima' from gaming communities and 'art machinima' that engages critically with the medium within contemporary art circuits. The festival's 2026 Critics' Prize was awarded to Niklas Poweleit's The Unknown Painting (2025), a work that investigates paintings reproduced within the online shooter Counter-Strike 2 (Valve, 2012). Poweleit's piece was developed through the Nouvelle Bug workshops organized by Il Varco Cinema. Other notable works presented include Francesco Mennella, Lucia Romanello, and Leonardo Madrussa's GI, your helicopters fall from the sky like broken birds (2025) and Alessandra Porcu's Decostruire l'algorithmo (2020). The festival also features a 'Game Engine Cinema' section for works created using game development tools like Unreal Engine, distinct from those made inside existing games.
