Microsoft's Project Solara Badge Is a Wearable Designed to Disappear

At Build 2026 on June 2nd, Microsoft's Applied Sciences Group unveiled Project Solara, an agent-first computing platform, alongside its first hardware concept: a reimagined access badge. Unlike previous wearable attempts like the Humane AI Pin or Rabbit R1, the badge is designed to be visually ignored, fitting into an object already worn daily. It features a touchscreen, fingerprint sensor, side-facing camera, 5G connectivity, and Qualcomm silicon. The strategic choice of form factor allows the device to integrate into existing workplace uniforms without demanding a new aesthetic. The platform, built on AOSP via Microsoft's Device Ecosystem Platform, uses just-in-time UI and agents instead of apps. A second concept, a desk companion with face authentication and UWB presence sensor, serves as a stationary access point. The badge and desk device are reference designs; further form factors are in development with Qualcomm and MediaTek. The approach parallels Apple's iOS 27 Liquid Glass design philosophy, retreating from distinctive hardware identity toward integration. The question remains whether this invisibility is design maturity or abdication.
