MIA Photo Fair 2026 Explores Metamorphosis Theme in Milan with 111 Exhibitors

The 15th edition of MIA Photo Fair opened in Milan from March 19-22, 2026, at Superstudio Più under the artistic direction of Francesca Malagra for the third consecutive year. This photography fair adopted 'Metamorphosis' as its central theme, examining transformations in visual languages, artistic practices, and identities. The concept draws inspiration from Ovid's exploration of change as a universal condition, while also addressing contemporary issues like climate change and the relationship between human and artificial elements. The selection committee chose 111 exhibitors, including 76 galleries—27 of which are international and 24 participating for the first time—alongside 16 institutional presences, special projects, exhibitions, 14 publishers, and 6 media partners. The fair is structured into four color-coded sections: a Main Section and three curated thematic areas. 'Beyond Photography – Dialogue,' curated by Domenico de Chirico, explores freedom of expression and dialogue between diverse ideas and artistic forms, featuring works that blend photography with sculpture, installation, painting, performance, and video. Notable projects include 'Metamorphosis of Beauty,' a solo show dedicated to Andrea Crespi that examines image transformation through technology, centered on the holographic work 'Butterfly Effect' developed with Italian startup TRIA. 'Focus Latino,' curated by Rischa Paterlini, presents Latin American, Iberian, and diasporic artists like Gleeson Paulino, whose vibrant images conceal cultural stories and traditions, alongside Italian and international artists investigating hybrid identities, migration, and cultural shifts. 'Reportage Beyond Reportage,' curated by Emanuela Mazzonis, investigates contemporary photography's evolution in an image-saturated environment, emphasizing photography as a tool for understanding reality. Photographer Jimmy Nelson commented on the current state of photography, noting the influence of algorithms and advocating for traditional artistic approaches. Francesca Malagra described the fair as an open platform connecting diverse visions, geographies, and languages while maintaining deep ties to Milan's cultural fabric. This year marks the first collaboration with city museums, creating an off-circuit dialogue with Milan. Malagra explained the theme reflects the fair's own transformation and photography's conceptual shift from simple documentation to addressing identity, global issues, and climate change over its 200-year history.
