Metamuseu Virtual Art Festival Opens Call for Digital-First Artist Residency

The Metamuseu Virtual Art Festival has launched its inaugural open call for a digital art residency program. This initiative invites artists to develop original works specifically designed for virtual environments, with applications accepted until April 26, 2026. The festival is organized by Pedro Veneroso and will function as an experimental website serving as a native digital exhibition space. Eight artists will be selected to participate in the four-month residency, each receiving a stipend of R$2,500 along with curatorial guidance. The program emphasizes creating works that utilize digital-native forms such as net art, generative art, virtual installations, telepresence, and interactive practices. Eligibility requires applicants to be at least 18 years old, either Brazilian citizens or foreign nationals who have resided in Brazil for a minimum of three years. The selection process incorporates diversity and inclusion measures, reserving at least four of the eight positions for artists based in Belo Horizonte and establishing quotas for Black, mixed-race, Indigenous artists, and artists with disabilities, or for projects focusing on digital accessibility. Beyond showcasing final artworks, the Metamuseu platform will archive creative processes, documentation, and educational materials, remaining accessible as an open digital collection after the festival concludes. The project also includes a public program featuring workshops, lectures, and discussions on art, technology, and artificial intelligence. Notably, researcher Gabriel Menotti from Queen's University will participate, offering insights on the boundaries and possibilities of digital exhibition spaces.
