Matter Neuroscience Installs Pay Phones to Connect Zoomers and Boomers Across Generations

Matter Neuroscience has set up refurbished pay phones in Boston and Reno to encourage interactions between Gen Z and Baby Boomers, both groups facing significant loneliness. One phone, dubbed "Call a Boomer," is located near Pavement Coffee House on the Boston University campus, while the other, labeled "Call a Zoomer," is found at a senior living facility in Reno, Nevada. When someone picks up a receiver at one site, it automatically connects to the other, fostering spontaneous conversations. Shared on social media, recorded dialogues include exchanges between April in Reno and Charlotte in Boston, as well as a discussion between 74-year-old Maria and a young man named William. Research cited by the organization reveals that social isolation can be more detrimental to health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day or excessive drinking. Matter Neuroscience states that engaging in positive conversations can enhance longevity by lowering cortisol levels and raising neurotransmitters such as dopamine and oxytocin. The initiative has grown to include more phones in San Francisco and Abilene, Texas, with the goal of bridging gaps between Republicans and Democrats. This project highlights that the fundamental molecules linked to happiness are the same across all human brains, irrespective of political affiliation.
