M-Kamera iPhone App Charges Per Virtual Film Roll

Victor Doroshenko has released M-Kamera, an iPhone app that simulates the experience of using a classic 35mm film rangefinder camera. The app uses Apple's Metal and CoreML technology to mimic a 50mm lens, and iPhone LiDAR for what is described as the first true rangefinder focusing on mobile. Users focus by swiping on screen, with a split-image patch overlapping when correct. A virtual film lever provides haptic feedback. The app offers full manual and automatic exposure, plus a hardcore mode that removes all aids. Photos are developed only after a simulated 24- or 36-shot roll is depleted. The app is free, but virtual film rolls cost $0.90 for 24 shots or $1.29 for 36 shots via in-app purchase. An infinity fridge subscription at $4.99/month allows six rolls stored in-app. M-Kamera simulates bokeh, vignette, grain, and color rendering for ISO 400 black and white, C-41 color negative, and E100 color reversal film, with color filters for black and white. Doroshenko emphasizes the deliberate limitations of analog photography. The app is exclusive to iPhone.
