Lucinda Childs Turns 86 with Bard Performances, New Gibney Contract

Choreographer Lucinda Childs, turning 86 on June 26, opens a weekend run of "Momentary Reprise" at Bard SummerScape (Fisher Center, Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., through June 28). She performs in the program, which includes "Geranium '64," an adaptation of her 1960s Judson Dance Theatre piece, and dances from "Einstein on the Beach" (tribute to Robert Wilson, who died last year) and "Available Light" (tribute to Frank Gehry, also died last year). "Distant Figure," an upstate premiere, is set to a passacaglia by Philip Glass, performed by pianist Anton Batagov. Childs recently signed a five-year contract as resident choreographer of Gibney Dance, a repertory company, and is preparing an hour-long premiere for them. Earlier this year, she had a retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum. The New Yorker also covers Tortoise's album "Touch" (first in nearly a decade), Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival (Paul Taylor Dance Company, Shamel Pitts, Uppercut Dance Theatre), the exhibition "Yves Saint Laurent and Photography" at ICP (through Sept. 28), Todd Almond's musical "I'm Almost There" at BAM Fisher (through June 28), Haifaa Al Mansour's film "Unidentified" (in limited release), and the musical adaptation of "Girl, Interrupted" at the Public Theatre (through July 12).
