Los Javis' La Mesías: A Genre-Defying Series Now Streaming on MUBI

La Mesías, the acclaimed Spanish series by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo (collectively known as Los Javis), is now streaming exclusively on MUBI in several countries, including the UK. The series, which premiered in Spain in 2023, blends family drama, magical realism, black comedy, and supernatural horror across seven episodes. It follows Enric (Roger Casamajor), a camera technician who discovers that a viral Christian girl group, Stella Maris, is actually composed of his six half-sisters, raised in a quasi-cult by his domineering mother, Montserrat. Montserrat is portrayed at different ages by Ana Rujas, Lola Dueñas, and Carmen Machi. The series also features cameos from Cecilia Roth and Rossy de Palma, and explores themes of memory, family, trauma, and the dangers of authoritarianism.
