London galleries adapt with new models amid market pressures

The gallery landscape in London is experiencing a transformation, grappling with a sluggish market, increasing expenses, and evolving collector preferences. Despite notable closures, approximately twenty galleries have launched or expanded recently. The London Gallery Weekend (LGW), set for June 5-7, highlights this tenacity. Last year, Emma Hodgson and Thomas Graham established Pale Horse Gallery in Marylebone, prioritizing exhibitions over art fairs, featuring Marijn van Kreij until July 18. Jeremy Epstein, co-founder of Edel Assanti and LGW, inaugurated a second location in St James's this year, showcasing Lonnie Holley until June 7. Elizabeth Xi Bauer has also opened a second venue in Exmouth Market, repurposing its Deptford site into studios. Last month, Sundaram Tagore launched a flagship gallery in London with a hybrid-themed group exhibition. Oly Durey rebranded as Larkin Durey last year, noting acquisitions by Tate, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Detroit Institute of Arts. Sarah Rustin, co-founder of LGW, underscores the importance of highlighting the variety within London’s gallery scene.
