KidSuper's Colm Dillane Hosts The People's Runway at Brooklyn Borough Hall with Lauryn Hill
On Saturday night, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso rallied the crowd at The People's Runway, a fashion show on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall. The event, now in its second year, was conceived with designer Colm Dillane of KidSuper, who grew up in the borough and runs his "Dream Factory" in South Williamsburg. Dillane, a Brooklyn Technical High School graduate, became the borough's first Arts Ambassador after discussing grant funding with Reynoso. The show selected five designers from over 300 applicants, each receiving $15,000, mentorship, and partnership opportunities. Moses Aina of IGBO-SISUN showed vibrant works inspired by African heritage; Rey Jaiteh presented streetwear-meets-business casual; Laurel Tiange Fang of Laurel Blue offered sinuous clothes in watery shades with rope details; Kuai Li of Quine Li displayed gravity-defying silhouettes in wacky furs; and Roderick Reyes staged a faux heist with pop-art pieces covered in store alarm tags and a cape of 100-dollar bills. Dillane also showed his own pieces, including one modeled by his mother. The front row included Joey Bada$, Jerome Boateng, and Da Baby. Wyclef Jean performed "No Woman, No Cry" with a rap break about Brooklyn, then brought out Lauryn Hill in a painted KidSuper coat, prompting the front row to rush the runway. Reynoso emphasized spreading love, saying, "It's the Brooklyn way."
