Kenneth Tyler's Printmaking Legacy Celebrated with Catalogue Raisonné at IFPDA Print Fair

The National Gallery of Australia is presenting a new three-volume catalogue raisonné of master printer Kenneth E. Tyler at the IFPDA Print Fair, running from 9-12 April at New York's Park Avenue Armory. Published in October 2025 after extensive research, Tyler Graphics: Catalogue Raisonné, 1986–2001 documents the workshop's innovative output. Tyler, now 94, began his career in the 1960s through the Tamarind Lithography Workshop before founding Gemini Ltd in Los Angeles in 1965, which became Gemini GEL with partners Stanley and Elyse Grinstein and Rosamund and Sidney Felsen. After leaving Gemini in 1973, Tyler established Tyler Graphics in New York in 1974, operating until 2001 and collaborating with artists including Helen Frankenthaler, Roy Lichtenstein, Donald Sultan, Robert Rauschenberg, Joseph Albers, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, and Kenneth Noland. The NGA holds the largest collection of Tyler's workshop materials, dating from 1965 to 2001, initiated by the museum's inaugural director James Mollison who acquired 621 prints, proofs, and drawings in 1973. Tyler's experimental approach included developing pulp-paper works in the mid-1970s that merged printmaking with painterly methods. A conversation between Donald Sultan, NGA curator Warwick Heywood, and scholar J. Cabelle Ahn is scheduled for April 11 at 4pm, coinciding with the catalogue's debut. The NGA is also hosting Proofs and Processes: The Kenneth Tyler Collection at its Canberra museum until 2 August.
