Jean Rondeau Presents Three Interpretations of Bach's Goldberg Variations at Bachfest Schaffhausen

festival-fair · 2026-04-04

Harpsichordist Jean Rondeau is presenting an innovative three-part interpretation of Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg Variations at Bachfest Schaffhausen in May 2026. The project features three distinct performances: a historically informed harpsichord rendition, a Baroque chamber arrangement for keyboards, traverso flute and strings by the ensemble Nevermind, and a contemporary composition titled UNDR for piano, percussion and electronics. UNDR represents a complete reimagining rather than a traditional arrangement, with percussion by Tancrède Kummer and sound design by Silouane Colmet Daâge. Rondeau describes UNDR as a deliberately unfinished work that explores compositional constraints similar to Bach's while incorporating improvisation and contemporary musical language. The Baroque ensemble version highlights contrapuntal elements through individual instrumental voices. Rondeau explains that engaging with transcription aligns with 18th-century compositional practices where Bach himself frequently rearranged works. The festival's theme 'Bach Timeless' is reflected in these diverse approaches, demonstrating how Bach's music transcends specific instrumentation and historical periods. Performances occur on May 15th, 16th and 17th, 2026 as part of Bachfest Schaffhausen running from May 13th to 17th.
