James Gwertzman Reveals 2026 Burning Man Temple Design Inspired by Rare Cactus Flower

Designer James Gwertzman has presented plans for the Temple of the Moon, the central structure for Burning Man 2026. The design draws inspiration from lunar cycles and the Queen of the Night cactus flower, which blooms briefly for one night, reflecting themes of impermanence. Using parametric modeling, the structure features curved timber elements arranged in petal-like forms around a central core, creating a radial layout. The temple will guide visitors through a winding path with alcoves for private reflection and a central chamber for gatherings. Natural light will play a key role, with openings capturing daylight and moonlight.
