Italian Cinema Absent from Cannes 2026 Due to Production Blockade and Funding Cuts
For the first time in years, no Italian films appear in the 2026 Cannes Film Festival selection, following a similar absence at the Berlin International Film Festival in February. Festival director Thierry Frémaux confirmed this exclusion extends to remaining announcements before May 12. The situation stems from an 18-month production blockade that began in 2024 when delays in public funding announcements froze most Italian film sets. Major Italian directors who regularly appear at Cannes—Nanni Moretti, Matteo Garrone, Paolo Sorrentino, and Alice Rohrwacher—have no films ready this year. Emerging filmmakers, who depend more heavily on public funds, were hit hardest by the production halt. Public funding for 2026 has been cut by €90 million to €600 million, with reductions targeting selective films with lower box office potential. Other regions also show reduced presence at Cannes 2026, including South America, the United Kingdom, and a limited U.S. showing of only independent films. Frémaux noted Spain has strong representation this year while Italy is absent, suggesting cyclical variations. The Venice Film Festival in September, being state-funded and Italian, will likely feature many domestic films despite the broader trend.
