Independent 20th Century Fair Expands 75% with Sotheby's Breuer Building Debut
The Independent 20th Century fair is set to take place from September 24 to 27 at the Breuer building on Manhattan's Upper East Side, which is currently occupied by Sotheby's. This year's fair has expanded by 75%, showcasing approximately 57 exhibitors and over 130 artists. Elizabeth Dee, the founder, arranged for Sotheby's CEO Charles Stewart to host the event in the building, which Sotheby's purchased for $100 million in 2023. Notable features include a conversation between Yves Klein and Lucio Fontana, alongside installations from both artists. Esther Schipper will mark 40 years of relational aesthetics with works from various creators. The fair began in 2008 with Dee's launch of the non-profit X, drawing 75,000 visitors in its first year. This fall, the Breuer building will also commemorate its 60th anniversary.
