Hong Kong Secures Five-Year Extension for Art Basel Fair with Expanded Programming

Hong Kong has renewed its agreement with Art Basel to host the international art fair for an additional five years, ensuring the city remains the exclusive regional venue. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Rosanna Law, Hong Kong's culture secretary, who detailed plans to expand both the scale and impact of the event. While the main fair will continue at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, satellite activities and large installations may utilize the newly opened Kai Tak Sports Park, a venue with over 50,000 capacity that debuted in 2025. Law emphasized that collaboration with Art Basel will extend beyond the annual March event to include public art education, art market research, and year-round cultural activities aimed at collectors, artists, and local communities including students. Attendance figures show the fair's growing popularity, with 80,400 visitors in 2024 and 86,500 the previous year. Concurrently, Hong Kong launched Digital Art @Central, a partnership with Art Basel featuring digital projections by artist DeeKay Kwon in the Central district. This installation, displaying 100 character representations of Hong Kong residents on the Hong Kong Club facade, runs nightly through March 29. Kwon's work draws inspiration from retro video games and aims to capture the city's dynamic cultural energy. The fair is part of Hong Kong's Mega 8 initiative, a months-long series of major arts, cultural, and sporting events.
