High Desert Art Fair Draws Collectors to California's Remote Western Setting

The High Desert Art Fair (HDAF) took place on March 28-29 at the Pioneertown Motel in California's High Desert region. Now in its fifth year and second at this venue, the event featured 20 galleries, nonprofits, studios, and publishers. Co-founded by Nicholas Fahey of Fahey/Klein Gallery and artist manager Candice Lawler, both local homeowners, the fair aims to attract Los Angeles visitors more easily than traditional gallery settings. The location is approximately two hours from Los Angeles, an hour from Palm Springs, and 30 minutes from Joshua Tree National Park. HDAF represents a growing trend of smaller, curated fairs offering alternatives to major international events like Art Basel and Frieze, with exhibitor costs around $3,500 for two days. The fair builds on an existing cultural ecosystem in the area, where artists including Ed Ruscha have long owned property. A VIP program included visits to sites such as Noah Purifoy's outdoor museum and Andrea Zittel's High Desert Test Sites. Artworks were priced accessibly, with many pieces selling for hundreds to a few thousand dollars, though a John Baldessari print sold for $41,000. The event included musical performances, with Devo frontman Mark Mothersbaugh headlining a showcase. The region has experienced significant cultural migration and rising real estate prices, drawing artists and collectors from major urban centers.
