HarperCollins Forms AI Animation Partnership with Toonstar for YouTube Series

HarperCollins has entered into a multi-year collaboration with Toonstar, an animation studio utilizing artificial intelligence technology, to transform selected literary works into original YouTube programming. The initial adaptation will be Friendship List, derived from Lisa Greenwald's middle grade book series, with HarperAlley planning a complementary graphic novel release. No specific timeline has been established for this project. The co-produced animated content will feature episodes ranging from approximately two to ten minutes in duration. Toonstar's CEO John Attanasio explained that their proprietary Ink & Pixel system integrates human artistic contributions with technological processes to achieve efficient, large-scale production. HarperCollins emphasized a creator-led approach, noting that authors will be involved in consultations and compensated through royalty arrangements. This development follows a similar agreement between Harlequin, a HarperCollins subsidiary, and Dashverse for AI-generated animated shorts, which prompted some Harlequin authors to express concerns about prior notification despite assurances of royalty payments. Liate Stehlik, recently appointed CEO and publisher of U.S. trade operations, stated that HarperCollins seeks innovative methods to distribute stories across contemporary platforms, praising Toonstar's capacity to maintain artistic integrity while adapting narratives for modern family audiences.
