Graciane Finzi's Musical Journey Recreates Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition

French-Italian composer Graciane Finzi, at age 80, has created an immersive concert-narrative titled 'L'Odyssée TransAntarctic' that musically interprets the 1914 polar expedition led by British captain Ernest Shackleton. The production premiered at the Printemps des Arts de Monte-Carlo festival in Monaco on April 3, 2026, with performances scheduled through April 4. The work draws from Shackleton's logbook and historical photographs to recount the shipwreck of the Endurance and the crew's survival on ice for over two years. The performance features the Ensemble Calliopée under conductor Karine Lethiec, with narration by actor Charles Berling. The composition blends classical instrumentation with electronic soundscapes, incorporating archival materials and Arctic audio environments. Following its Monaco presentation, the production is planned for an international tour in 2027. The work explores scientific, ecological, and human dimensions of polar exploration through musical storytelling.
