Google Maps Introduces AI-Powered Photo Selection and Automated Captions for User Contributions

Google Maps has launched several new features focused on user-generated photos and videos. One feature scans a user's phone to identify relevant images for specific locations, requiring media access permissions in the app's settings. This photo recommendation tool is currently available worldwide on Android devices, with iOS support planned for the coming months. Another innovation uses Google's Gemini AI model to generate automated captions for uploaded photos, analyzing images through computer vision to suggest descriptive text. These caption suggestions are initially limited to English language users on iOS in the United States, with plans for broader international and Android expansion. Google has also enhanced user profile visibility by displaying Local Guide levels more prominently and introducing gold-colored profiles for high-level contributors. The platform now shows total contribution points in the Contribute tab and has updated achievement badges to recognize different types of contributors. Google reports having 500 million Maps contributors globally, with these features designed to help users make decisions through authentic visual content.
