Google Images Turns 25 with New AI-Powered Search Features

digital · 2026-07-14

Google Images celebrates its 25th anniversary with the introduction of two new features: a browsable home page with dynamic, personalized image galleries and AI-generated images directly in AI Overviews using the Nano Banana model. The new home page, rolling out on desktop in the U.S. in English, allows users to browse a tailored gallery and save ideas to collections. Image generation in AI Overviews, also rolling out in English, creates custom visuals from text prompts. These updates build on 25 years of innovation, including milestones like the 2001 launch of Google Images (inspired by Jennifer Lopez's green Versace dress), 2009's Similar Images, 2011's Search by Image, 2018's Google Lens, 2022's Multisearch, 2024's Circle to Search (on 580 million Android devices), and 2025's Lens + AI Mode, Search Live, and Visual Results in AI Mode. Future features include 2026's Circle to Search Multi-Object Recognition and Intelligent Search Box.
