Google DeepMind Uses AI to Recreate Pelé's 'Lost Goal' from 1959

Using artificial intelligence, Google DeepMind has brought to life a goal scored by Brazilian soccer icon Pelé that was never recorded on film. This remarkable event took place on August 2, 1959, during a match between Santos and Clube Atlético Juventus at São Paulo's Javari Stadium. Pelé executed three sombrero flicks, flicked the ball past the goalkeeper with his knee, and then headed it into an unguarded net. He regarded it as his finest goal, although only a photograph by Raphael Herrera documented it. DeepMind utilized this image alongside historical narratives and its Gemini Omni AI model to recreate 1959 São Paulo. A film crew filmed at the existing Javari Stadium, employing local actors in vintage jerseys. The video is currently showcased at the Pelé Museum in Santos, with Tom Murray, a research engineer at Google DeepMind, calling the project an enhancer of creativity.
