GAMeC Launches Film Series on Education and Freedom Inspired by Paulo Freire and bell hooks

festival-fair · 2026-03-24

GAMeC, in partnership with Lab 80 film and the Department of Foreign Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Bergamo, presents 'A Practice of Freedom,' a film program starting March 27, 2026. This monthly series is part of GAMeC's interdisciplinary initiative 'Pedagogia della Speranza,' which examines education as a means for liberation and change. Inspired by Brazilian educator Paulo Freire and American activist bell hooks, the program will feature classic films, auteur works, and artist videos, offering new opportunities for discussion and study. It will explore alternative narratives and critical perspectives on three main themes: the marginalization of certain social groups, which challenges traditional norms and imagines resistant cultures; pedagogical experimentation in artistic and creative experiences aimed at building shared knowledge to impact society; and issues related to new technologies and algorithmic thinking, envisioning more ethical and responsible uses. The series opens on March 27 at 9:00 PM in the Sala dell'Orologio at Palazzo della Libertà in Bergamo, with a screening of 'Wider Than the Sky' by Valerio Jalongo (2025), a documentary addressing artificial intelligence as a major contemporary challenge. The film reveals surprising aspects of AI, from corporate black boxes to artists collaborating with generative AI, and from world champions competing against AI-guided drones to humanoid robots claiming emotions. Through science, poetry, and art, it investigates consciousness and what makes us human. The screening is in its original language with Italian subtitles.
