Gagosian Brings Jeff Koons's Rare 'Corks (Couple)' to Art Basel Paris at the Grand Palais
Gagosian will take part in Art Basel Paris at the Grand Palais, mounting a booth of paintings, sculpture, and photographs that trace defining movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The gallery ties its selection to artists currently featured in major museum shows in Paris and abroad. Anchoring the presentation is Jeff Koons's Corks (Couple) (2011–18), a polychrome bronze that has seldom been exhibited. The work rises more than three meters (10 feet) and renders a cluster of oversized corks with illusionistic textures, wine stains, and stamped marks of origin and vintage. Its grouping loosely evokes two figures in an embrace, linking it to Koons's Antiquity series, begun in 2008, and to themes of beauty, eros, and the Dionysian. Marcel Duchamp's Roue de bicyclette is shown alongside the Koons bronze. The fair presentation places contemporary and Modern objects in direct dialogue within the Grand Palais.
