Frieze New York opens, Cranach's Hitler-era provenance revealed, Ajamu X at Walker Art Gallery

The latest edition of Frieze New York is now open, with coverage from The Art Newspaper's editor-in-chief in the Americas, Ben Sutton, and art market editor Kabir Jhala. Separately, a photograph of Lucas Cranach the Elder's 'Cupid Complaining to Venus' (1526-27) in Adolf Hitler's Munich apartment has been published for the first time in an English-language publication, in The Art Newspaper's May print edition. The painting, held by the National Gallery in London, has a complicated provenance. Ben Luke discusses the story with special correspondent Martin Bailey, who has followed it since the 1990s. The early 1940s photograph later appeared in a 1978 furniture auction catalogue by Hermann Historica, Munich. Additionally, the episode's Work of the Week is Ajamu X's 'Glamour Posse' series from the early 1990s, featuring Curtis Agard and Rikki. The series is part of 'Gender Stories', a UK touring exhibition opening at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Ben Luke speaks with gallery head Charlotte Keenan.
