Frieze New York 2026: Nature, Heritage, and Identity Take Center Stage

The 15th edition of Frieze New York opened at The Shed in New York City from May 13–17, 2026. The fair featured a diverse and curated selection of artists whose works emphasized heritage, identity, and nature. Many sculptural and mixed-media pieces used natural materials, contrasting with the industrial aesthetic of the fair's recent LA edition. Notable presentations included Gagosian's cork sheets by Giuseppe Penone, Nara Roesler's cajacatinga wood sculpture by Marcelo Silveira, Gallery Hyundai's godret stone and rope piece by Seung-taek Lee, and Lawrie Shabibi's marble and lapis-inlay works by Hamra Abbas. Kelly Sinnapah Mary's solo booth at James Cohan featured 'The Sacred Garden,' a monumental polyptych blending Caribbean and Indian folklore with family history. Pia Camil's 'Into the Wild' series at OMR reworked exoticism into feminine empowerment. Mor Charpentier's dual presentation of Nohemí Pérez's charcoal seascape 'Abismo I' and Anas Albraehe's dreamlike cloud paintings drew large crowds. Other highlights included Joe Andoe's tulips next to a James Turrell at Almine Rech, Hayley Barker's sold-out solo presentation at Night Gallery, and Celia Paul's abstracted landscapes at Victoria Miro. Firenze Lai (White Cube) and Martha Jungwirth (Thaddaeus Ropac) led sales with seven-figure placements, as reported by ArtLyst. The fair saw strong sales and museum acquisitions, indicating continued support for provocative, identity-driven works.
