Frieze New York 2026 Announces Whitney Biennial Collaboration and New Acquisition Fund

The 2026 edition of Frieze New York will take place from May 13 to 17 at The Shed, featuring over 65 exhibitors. This year's fair includes significant institutional partnerships with the Whitney Museum, Dia Art Foundation, and Counterpublic triennial, presenting performances and installations both within and outside the fair venue. A notable collaboration involves the Whitney Biennial, where artist Jonathan González will display his photographic installation 'Body Configurations' (2023–25) on the sixth floor of The Shed. Additionally, González will perform 'magic hour–golden time' (2026) from May 15 to 17 on the Whitney Museum's terraces and the High Line. Drew Sawyer, a cocurator of the Biennial, described González as an important voice in contemporary performance whose work engages with architecture and environment, extending the exhibition's themes beyond the gallery. The fair will also introduce a new acquisition fund for its Focus section, supported by collector Michael Sherman and the Sherman Family Foundation. This five-year fund will allocate $50,000 annually: $20,000 each for two artworks and $5,000 unrestricted awards to the artists. For 2026, the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum will each receive one acquired work. Sherman emphasized the fund's goal to build relationships between artists and museums while supporting emerging voices. Other presentations include a site-responsive installation and performance by Kite (Oglála Lakȟóta) for Counterpublic's third edition, titled 'Coyote Time,' and a suite of moving image works by conceptual artist David Lamelas, presented by Dia Art Foundation. Lamelas's works, such as 'To Pour Milk into a Glass' (1972) and 'Time As Activity' (1969–ongoing), will be featured, with Dia deputy director Humberto Moro noting that this expands the resonance of Lamelas's practice within the neighborhood's cultural ecosystem. Christine Messieno, Frieze's Americas director, highlighted that these commissions encourage reflection on the relationship between bodies, environments, and time.
